Inspect Your Gutters (Or Let Us Do It!)

You can inspect your gutter system yourself, or contact us for a professional evaluation. The best time to see how well your gutters are working is during a rainstorm . Observe your downspouts – you should see a steady flow of water.

  • Water should flow freely out of the downspouts. If not, there is a blockage of debris or the gutter system is not properly pitched to drain water towards the downspout(s)improper pitch not directing water towards the downspout.
  • Leaks, drips and water stains on fascia/siding, or erosion/pooling near your foundation.

Common Gutter Repairs & Maintenance Needs:

Be aware of these common issues. Andy's Custom Gutters can address them all:

  • Sealing: Corners, seams, end caps, and outlets should be resealed every 5-10 years to prevent leaks. Look for watermarks or damage to wood, landscaping, or your foundation as signs.
  • Proper Pitch & Adjustments: Gutters must be precisely pitched using a level to ensure water flows correctly towards the downspouts. Sagging or settling can disrupt this pitch, requiring adjustment or re-pitching.
  •  Flashing Installation/Repair: Flashing should be installed under the roof shingles and extend down the back of the gutter to prevent water from leaking behind the gutter, and pooling at the foundation.
  • Downspout Issues:
  • Extensions: Downspouts extensions should extend at least 5' from your foundation and graded to move water away from the foundation to prevent seepage.
  • Split Seams: Most standard downspouts have a vertical seam. Due to natural expansion and contraction from temperature changes, this seam can split open over time. This causes water to leak out the back, often pooling directly against your foundation. If a seam is compromised, replacement is usually recommended. If splitting is a recurring problem, installing a heating cable might be a preventative solution.
  • Underground Drainage: If downspouts are draining into an underground drainage system, be sure there aren't any blockages causing backup or slowing down the flow of water.
  • Terminated Drains: If underground drains are no longer used, be sure to cement or close off that drain to prevent water or animals from entering.
  • Holes or Corrosion: A patch can be installed on a hole or corroded gutter to prevent leaking and extend its life.
  • Ice Damming Damage: Ice dams put significant weight on gutters, causing them to sag, pull away from the fascia, and lose their proper pitch. Installing heating cables can prevent ice dams, and we can re-pitch damaged gutters to restore proper water flow.
